Simon Says: Pain and the Brain
Simon and I normally do our show on the LAST WEDNESDAY of each month .. However this time, we’re going to kick off the new month & recognize our Independence .. Before and After Brain Injury. I was sick last week, so we deferred to now. Thanks Simon 🙂 Over the evolution of brain injury and the study of pain, in recent years old original assumptions have shifted. It used to be said that the brain didn’t feel pain. Now science is recognizing that the brain has connections to issues of chronic pain, that loop back to specific parts of the brain. One such discovery comes by the name of Central Sensitization, or Central Sensitivity Syndromes. Our brain injuries can and do alter our central nervous system, and cause a convergence of chronic pain conditions, adding to our original BI residuals. We are not Dr’s, only survivors who crack the books and pass on information of interest, that hopefully you find helpful.
Best Seller Dr. Eben Alexander Shares NDE’s
After decades as a physician and teacher at Harvard Medical School and elsewhere, renowned academic neurosurgeon, Dr. Eben Alexander, thought he knew how the brain, mind, and consciousness worked. A transcendental Near-Death Experience (NDE) during a week-long coma from an inexplicable brain infection changed all of that– completely. He has spent the last seven years since his NDE reconciling his rich spiritual experience with contemporary physics and cosmology. He discovered that by probing deeply into our own consciousness, we transcend the limits of the human brain, and of the physical-material realm. A pioneering scientist and thought leader in consciousness studies, Dr. Alexander has been a guest on Dr. Oz, Oprah, and many other national and international media programs. His books, Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon’s Journey into the Afterlife and The Map of Heaven: How Science, Religion, and Ordinary People Are Proving the Afterlife, have collectively spent more than two years atop the New York Times and international bestseller lists.

Tonight we will discuss autoimmune disorders primarily specific to the brain, spinal cord, and psychiatric issues. Most of the disorders involve inflammation, and other common features.
Former Hosts and Where They are Now
Many of you remember former BIRN Host, Fantastic Frank Johnson. He was trapped in a fire, carried out in a body bag, and suffered a substantial anoxic brain injury. Motivated to Inspire millions, Frank has been a platform speaker, had his story printed in multiple publications, and was of course, a radio host! He has been involved in many enterprises, and one is free to you – Get his Free Guide “7 Motivational Secrets to Excel Every Day” at FFHero.com. Also check out his story in the Chicken Soup for the soul TBISOUP edition. Dave Pronko once served as a paid caregiver for Frank. Most times when we discuss caregivers, it is in terms of a spouse, or an institutional setting. A private caregiver iis another option we don’t often discuss. Tonight we will hear from the pros and cons from both sides of that coin. Unfortunately, Dave went on to suffer a couple of horrible accidents, and became a survivor himself. In this case we hear the unique perspective of when the caregiver becomes the survivor.
Simon Says: TBI, Changing and Adapting
Welcome back to Simon! Aside from our assorted health issues keeping us apart on the air waves for a couple of months – The best laid plans as they say … Our last WED of each month shows have been spotty. Hopefully now we are back in the groove. We will be discussing life interrupting our plans, imparting extreme change, and our ability to accept, take affirming action and adapt to our new life, reframed. No easy task and sadly some are never able. For those who are, they suffer their grief, and come out the other side – How? Life is for the living, how do we define a happy, productive life? We honor our fallen, but never want to leave behind the living still suffering. April 26th (encourage you to check out program On Demand) I interviewed Joe Pisano, pisanoartistry.com – immortalizing heroes to life with his art. Timely anytime, but especially with Memorial Day still lingering in our minds. Joe also discussed news from Dr. Chrisanne Gordon, Founder of resurrectinglives.org. Their film “Brainstorms” was a contender at the GI Film Festival Award in San Diego, to happen two weeks after our interview! Happy to announce they WON! Film demonstrates what it’s like to suffer a TBI through the eyes of survivor.

WarHawk Service Dogs
Kevin “WarHawk” Doncaster is a United States Marine Veteran. He served in Iraq and Afghanistan and has a combined 14 years in service to his country as both a Marine, and Department of Defense Contractor.
