Blessed with Keck

I had known Bill for many years, when I learned he had suffered a TBI. He’d had a lengthy road of recovery the past couple years, and then a severe car accident too. Bill was always strong as a bull, and few have had a more colorful past and turn around. Between his own addiction, chronic pain, and mental health challenges – He fought like the warrior he had always been and overcame, continuing to live a life of service. In spite of his challenges, Bill had a heart bigger than most. I was blessed to have him as part of my life for so long. Bill Keck was a dear friend who passed in 2021, but his story lives on. Prior to his retirement, Bill, a US Navy Veteran who did two tours in Nam, developed an alcohol and drug treatment center, within a Homeless Shelter. He worked there for almost 20yrs, during which he wrote a book about recovery and miracles. Please watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHjh6OZvwug We were out of touch for a few years, so I was shocked to hear about his brain injury. After being a host for so long, I wonder if he had prior blows to the head during his service, either to our country or at the shelter.

Brain Aneurysm Awareness Month & RIP Rico

September is Brain Aneurysm Awareness Month. An estimated 6.7 million people in the United States have an unruptured brain aneurysm or 1 in 50 people. The annual rate of rupture is approximately 8 – 10 per 100,000 people. About 30,000 people in the United States suffer a brain aneurysm rupture each year. A brain aneurysm ruptures every 18 minutes. There are almost 500,000 deaths worldwide each year caused by brain aneurysms, and half the victims are younger than 50. Ruptured brain aneurysms are fatal in about 50% of cases. Of those who survive, about 66% suffer some permanent neurological deficit. Approximately 15% of people with a ruptured aneurysm die before reaching the hospital. Most of the deaths are due to rapid and massive brain injury from the initial bleeding. We recently lost a valued advocate in the Brain Aneurysm Community – Rico Principe. He founded one of the largest online aneurysm support pages on FB, helping thousands. We’d like to pay tribute to him and the service he provided so many. The shock of his passing has rocked the community. We will also hear from fellow Brain Aneurysm Survivors in the interest of sharing, educating, and raising awareness. All know of Heart Disease, Cancer, etc. Much fewer know about Aneurysm, unless their lives have been touched by it.

We are told by professionals, and or make assumptions (or hopes) for a certain recovery time and protocol – But are often met with a scenario much different. How do we handle the changes and associated emotions? In another show we discussed the Writer’s Strike in Hollywood. Still unresolved, the Actors have gone on strike. With Simon’s background in entertainment, I and many of you found this interesting. We’ll get an update and understand the impact their cause has on our entertainment.

Wounded Warrior, Wounded Home

My guests for tonight are Marshele Carter Waddell & Dr. Kelly Orr, PhD, ABPP…Who penned Wounded Warrior,Wounded Home. (Amazon) When a combat veteran struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and/or traumatic brain injury (TBI), every member of the family experiences the effects. Spouses, parents, and children must undergo changes on the home front, a process that resembles the phases of grief. Confusion, hurt, anger, guilt, fatigue, and fear lie behind their brave smiles and squared shoulders. Wounded Warrior, Wounded Home gives hurting families a look inside the minds and hearts of wounded warriors and guides them in developing their own personal plan for physical, emotional, and spiritual wholeness in the wake of war. The authors, one the wife of a career US Navy SEAL and the other a clinical psychologist and Vietnam veteran, speak from their own experiences of living with PTSD and TBI. They also share insights from dozens of families and careful research, offering readers/listeners a hope-filled way forward.
