Veteran In and Out of the Military

Kelly Sanders served her country from the early eighties to 1997, where she suffered no lasting ill effects. In Sept 1997, she survived a traumatic brain injury, and was evaluated for acceptance to the TBI, TRC Program in August 1998. In the following years, Kelly received further education, allowing her to work in massage, recreational, and physical therapy. Due to lack of employment options, she applied for employment in Developmental Services for the county, and completed the fifty three courses offered by the college of Developmental Disabilities in June 2008. She later went on to earn her CNA, and completed The Council on Developmental Disabilities “Partners in Policymaking” leadership course. www.rejuven8bykelly.com

With Veteran’s Day approaching, we honor our Vets and see how the spirit of service to our country, continues from Military to TBI life.

Mom Who Lost her Son to Sports Brain Injury

My guest is Debra Pyka, a mother who is trying to bring awareness to not only prevent suicide, but to warn of the dangers of sports and head trauma to our youth. She will be discussing her son Joseph’s life story, playing sports, CTE which led to years of depression and ultimately, his suicide. Joseph’s brother Seth will join us, since they played sports all through their childhood together. She has tried to contact politicians, White House and Michelle Obama, with no one concerned or responding to her. She also wants to shed light on the responsibility of the NFL with the research started 20 years ago, to warn all parents of the dangers of concussions/head trauma and future effects, which the NFL denied for many years. More young people are dying from sports related injuries than ever. www.sportslegacy.org/research/legacy-donors/joseph-chernach

Peachy story with a fellow survivor!

In 1995, Bartley Williams was a typical 16yr old, who had just gotten his driver’s license. Life was good. He was playing football, had just seen a Beach Boys Concert, was enjoying the company of his girl…And then as happens far too often, an accident changed his life for good. Bartley will share his story with us, but even more, with his germinating interest in TBI Awareness. He is an administrator on “The Patient Directed Health Care Group”, started by Ruth Lycke, and hopes to help others who are struggling with the trials of Brain Injury.
