My guest tonight is Shubie Gomez, a multiple brain aneurysm survivor, 5yrs out. As I recognize the anniversary this week of my own rupture, I’m happy to be having her join me. We want to help listeners better grasp this little understood example brain trauma. Think the topic doesn’t apply to you? One in 50 people in the U.S. have unruptured aneurysms, of which many are not yet aware. Every 18 minutes an aneurysm ruptures, killing 40% almost instantly and leaving over 60% of survivors with life long neurological deficits. A rupture is sometime also referred to as a Subarachnoid Hemorrhage or Hemorrhagic Stroke. Listen in so you’ll better understand a condition that affects more people than you’d imagined. Be Aware!

Golden Hour of Treatment
In 1982 on his way home from a library near Norfolk Virginia, Marty Salo was struck by a car. He was the number 6 passenger “hot load” on the nightingale Aeromedical transport/ambulance service. “That illustrated the true effectiveness of the golden hour for treatment”, he’s since heard from several physicians. He spent around 10-13 days as a 1-1-1 on the Glascow Coma Scale. By day 49, he was still not resolved, but was far enough along that his parents brought him home. His Mom and many of her friends are nurses, who treated him at home along the way. Marty had tutoring by a 5th grade Catholic School Teacher, and eventually matriculated. Now working at a local hospital, he has been declared a miracle for professionals who hear his story. Marty sees it as being a testament to the power of perseverance and continuing forward on the journey.

After the Cheering Stops and CTE Sets In
For 29 years, author Cyndy Feasel was married to former NFL player Grant Feasel, an offensive lineman who toiled in the trenches, battering his body with every snap of the ball.
In her newbook, After the Cheering Stops: An NFL Wife’s Story of Concussions, Loss and the Faith That Saw Her Through, Cyndy Feasel shares how the repeated hits taken during her husband’s ten-year career in the NFL and the unknown effects of a degenerative brain disease (CTE) turned her life upside down and ultimately killed the man she loved.
Most people don’t know or understand how CTE, and the repetitive collisions most football players and athletes take day after day, affect the athletes and their families. She wants to show a human side—and share a female perspective—of what happens off the field. See site: afterthecheeringstops.com
