Peer Pressure and Brain Injury
Kim and Caren will be discussing Peer Pressure as a causal factor for Brain Injury. Whether it’s a Gang or a Frat House, Sports, Social Media Dares and more .. Young people have been experiencing even more debilitating or deadly brain injuries. These injuries level the playing field, because regardless of race, finances, religion, etc – Brain Injury doesn’t discriminate. March is Brain Injury Awareness Month, and this topic is one seldom discussed. This is unfortunate, because most of these injuries are preventable. Join us and see how you can help.
Dr. Maria Brings The Joy Switch
Join Kim and Dr Maria Romanas as they discuss “The Joy Switch” .. Gotta have it!! Discussion prompted by a book of the same name by Chris M. Coursey. Inspired Maria, so she’s paying it forward 🙂 Kick off of Brain Injury Awareness Month – March Dr. Maria is a fellow brain injury survivor who works full-time as a hospital pathologist. She had to learn to become her own self-therapist to prevent “brain-injured moments” at work and at home. She says, “My cognitive impairments may be permanent, but disability is negotiable.” Her goal is to help other survivors learn to operate their brains in a new way in order to minimize disability and optimize their own recoveries.
Simon Says: Who Are We Now
Brain Injury Awareness Month around the corner. Focus on Falls, the number one cause of TBI. Covid .. Is it the end and time to celebrate, or are Politics in the way of public health? After 2+ years of our lives being turned upside down from the virus, the politics, the economy, and our brains .. Where are we, and who have we become?
Healing Through Coherence Revolution
Dr. Mark Halpren’s Coherence Revolution seeks to initiate drastic change by creating a fundamentally new way of being for millions around the world — free of fears, negative mind-chatter, self-destructive patterns, relationship woes, financial struggles and more. Because you can only create a dream life from a place of coherence. And he even has a plan for that. Mark says. ”When you focus on creating more coherence in the moment, it helps shift your thoughts away from getting rid of specific symptoms, solving stressful situations or resolving emotional disputes…It simply isn’t possible to be in coherence when your subconscious is running automatic programs base on negative belief systems…Healing occurs because when you experience a high degree of coherence in your brain and body, you change at the cellular level.”
Self Advocacy to Love for Self and Others with Kim and Caren
With Valentine’s a few days off, we decided to discuss Self Love (where a successful relationship begins) – how to become and self advocate, both formally and informally. Self love mean not settling for less than you deserve, and having a high regard for your own well being and happiness. When we learn that, we are free to share and pass it on, while tapping into our own higher selves. There has been so much isolation among so many demographics these past couple years, perhaps Valentine’s Day may take a different turn for many – Those who pay the love forward, to others in need. Random acts of kindness for others, can make all the difference right now. Unite and fight for what we all really want on the bottom line – To love and be loved, and appreciated. It starts with us.
Dr. Maria in the House! Social Perception & TBI
Dr. Maria Romanas is a fellow survivor of a borderline severe brain injury due to a rollover car accident at age 18. Despite being discharged with no inpatient or outpatient cognitive therapy, she was able to go to college then medical/graduate school (MD/PhD). Like many survivors she was not aware of her own cognitive impairment. In 2013 (29 years after the injury), she finally went through an 8-week cognitive rehabilitation program that taught her how to observe that dysfunctions that resulted from her trying to use her brain the normal way. She learned to implement compensation strategies to prevent disabled functioning and optimize her own recovery. She became her own self-therapist. Although she works full-time as a hospital pathologist, her life’s goal is to advocate for other survivors to receive the cognitive rehabilitation therapy and to teach principles of self-therapy so that hey can maximize their own recoveries. Tonight’s discussion will focus on Social Perception and Brain Injury.
Simon Says: Where Are We Now and What’s Next?
We’ve all been through a lot more stress than we bargained for the past two years. Between politics and the Virus (no matter what side of the fence you’re on) .. There has been a prolonged stressful undercurrent, along with our other personal stressful issues. This layering effect of stress has caused increases in mental health issues, physical health issues that hadn’t manifest before, and generally compounded anything going on in our lives we’ve deemed to cause stress. Needless to say relentless stress is not a good thing. We can’t change external circumstances, but as the New Year has rolled in, perhaps we can orchestrate a new beginning which doesn’t necessarily change reality, but our perception of it. Reminder – 4 “Free” Covid Tests Per Address at covidtests.gov – Easy sign up & you’ve really already paid for them. Encourage you to write for yours. They will come through US Postal Service.
